MTV Previews “Love The Way You Lie Part 2″

When MTV News got an early listen of the album, we were treated to six unreleased songs, including Rihanna’s duet with Eminem, “Love the Way You Lie (Part II),” a sequel to their smash single released earlier this year. On the song, Rihanna tells her part of the story. The song opens with just her voice and the piano as she sings, “On the first page of our story, the future seemed so bright/ Then this thing turned so evil.”

When the chorus kicks in, the hook from the original track is bigger and more cinematic than ever before, but it’s Em’s seething anger when he delivers his verse that will have fans going bananas. He raps about the pain she causes him just as much as he causes her, spitting rhymes about trading punches with his lady love.

Sleigh Bells’ Derek Miller on Working with M.I.A.

Are we going to be treated to some guest vocals from M.I.A. on the new album?

Possibly, but when we record, we’re pretty insular. There are three people involved basically. It’s myself, Alexis, and we work with an incredible engineer named Shane Stonebeck, and it’s sort of like, nobody goes in and nobody comes out. It’s just the three of us locked in there. And I like that idea. So, probably not, but you never know.

But you enjoyed working with M.I.A.?

I did. It was amazing. I was only in the studio with her for like a week, but it was great. It gave me a lot of confidence, actually, because that was in October, a year ago, almost a year ago to the day. I think this was the week last year that I was working with her. And that was before Treats, we didn’t go to the studio for Treats until January. Yeah, I just felt really good about it.

Pusha T What?

Bangladesh gave the dl to complex magazine about what went down during a recent recording sesh with Pusha T. Here it is :

“He was like, ‘Give me something hard.’ We went into the studio one day, I played him a few beats, and he picked [a beat]. He went home the next day. I’m thinking he’s gonna write to the joints. He came back to the studio like, ‘Man, I like these beats, but I want to hear some more.’ So I played him some more, but I was running out of things to play. I was like, ‘I ain’t got much left to play but I can make you something right now.’ Then I remembered this beat I had been making in L.A. I put that beat on and he just went crazy. He was like, ‘This the beat I was talking about!’ The song I’m talking about, you wouldn’t expect him to be on it. With the G.O.O.D. Music thing and the Neptunes, you never heard Pusha on shit like that. And he was even saying, ‘They ain’t gonna expect that.’ It’s gonna kill the game.”

I'll Show You Mine, If You Show Me Yours

Throughout the last few days I've been thinking a lot about guilty pleasures. We all have them, regardless if there in the form of men, music or paint on pants. For the purposes of this blog though I'll stick to music.

I recently had a lecture on authenticity in popular music and how it really doesn't exist. Yet, it continues to cast a shadow over the artistic medium. You see, authenticity in music and perhaps in general, is a social construction. We, as fans, ascribe authenticity to specific genres of music, making it a cultural construct infused with blatant fluidity.

And this is why I'm so fascinated by musical guilty pleasures, as there guilty insofar as our ascribed musical personalities tell us they are. So in the sake of eliminating musical elitism, here are my current guilty pleasures....not that you should care.

Kelly Rowland - Commander
Whatta Night - Ricky J
Mr. Immature - Stef Lang
Like a G6 - Far East Movement
Taio Cruz - Dynamite
Nelly - Just a Dream

And if you're judging me right now, ask yourself this question....where does your authenticity come from? (Too deep, I know.)

"From Underground to Uptown"

Here's a sneak peek of paper on Street Art, minus my Hegelian analysis of "Exit Through the Gift Shop"...which is a must see documentary.

Throughout the past decade a new artistic movement has blossomed in the backyards of cities near and far. Street art, whose beginnings date back to the late 1970’s, is a predecessor of graffiti writing and uses stickers, stenches, posters and sculptures to make their mark by whatever means necessary. Graffiti writing, which is separate from graffiti, is the movement generally associated with hip-hop culture. Although there is a great deal of crossover between the two artistic genres, street art has broken away from graffiti writings emphasis on the tag, or rather the signature of the author. The tag becomes an aestheticised form of vandalism that sees its author writing the same word over and over again. Street art no longer has the intention of creating a brand through the continual usage of this tag, as it isolates meaning to a particular community or culture. Instead, street art is about interacting with the masses and reflecting on the place in which it was installed. In essence, graffiti writing and street art differ in terms of form, content and intention. With its focus on visual symbols rather than the written word, as well as its ability to embrace a much wider range of media than graffiti, street art is able to create pieces that possesses universal meaning.
