For a couple days now, I’ve been seeing the story about how a guy had an auction up on eBay in which he claimed that he had used public tax information from a whole shitload of art sales to definitively deduce the true identity of the street artist known as Banksy. The auction was pulled once, due to the fact that the seller wasn’t selling a tangible item, and now with only hours to go, and with the bidding passing $1 million, eBay’s pulled the auction again. Was it all just another hoax?
When the auction was pulled the first time, it was put back up with a tangible item— a printed card with Banksy’s real name on it and this time it seemed that it was going to go all the way.
But the problem is that Banksy has gone through an incredible amount of effort to keep his identity top secret but to a few close confidents and I sincerely doubt that he would make it so easy as to make himself trackable through art sales. For one, Banksy’s people have said in the past that he doesn’t profit from the sale of his art or reproductions or merchandise. I’m sure someone’s feeding cash to him, but I imagine it’s all under the table.
Or, this all just could have been a hoax. Banksy loves a good hoax (see, possibly his movie Exit Through the Gift Shop… no really, see it. It’ fucking incredible). But if it’s not a hoax and the seller was on target, I’m glad to see the auction down. God bless Banksy and if he doesn’t want anyone to know who he is, fuck anyone who tries.
